Every organization is built on its purpose. Most crises arise from a lack of clarity about purpose; from a lack of coherence or of a vision shared by its members. The first mandate of an organization is to clarify its purpose and promise, and to articulate everything else from that north.

Clarifying an organization's purpose, articulating it in a text that contains mission, vision, meaning and objectives, is an exercise that requires sustained participatory methodologies. A lack of clarity about purpose, or of coherence between what is said and what is done, is one of the main sources of organizational crisis.

Purpose guides actions and makes it possible to deploy resources efficiently to fulfill the organizational promise. Without that clear north, resources are lost, fall into disorder, and the team loses its bearings.
